About Manvel, Texas
Manvel is an unincorporated community area located in Brazoria County, Texas. It was founded by cotton farmers who named it after a Civil War general. Manvel began as a small farming town and grew to become a place where people could live and work. With the growth of Houston over the years, Manvel managed to remain a smaller town while still growing its own identity as one of those “everyday” cities that make up the fabric of America.
Manvel’s history begins with Stephen F. Austin’s original colonization of the Gulf Coast. Early residents included ranchers and outlaws such as Samuel King, Howard Hughes Sr., and Thomas Hogg (father of James Stephen Hogg). The town did not incorporate until 1980; it had been a part of Friendswood (incorporated 1967) and Pearland (incorporated 1969). Manvel has grown rapidly since the 1990s—more than doubling its population between 1990 and 2000—and continues to develop at a rapid rate.
